Crema Marfil and natural stone: what the material demands

Crema Marfil is a beige, often heavily veined limestone-marble that's porous and reactive to acidic cleaning products, so it needs a penetrating seal before grouting and again once fully installed, or staining and dulling will show within the first year. Its warm, creamy base tone also makes colour consistency between slabs important to check before fixing, since even stone from the same quarry batch can vary subtly in tone and veining density. The adhesive bed has to be a white, polymer-modified, rapid-set type with controlled moisture release rather than standard grey cementitious adhesive, which can show through as shadowing beneath the paler stone. Movement joints need careful placement too, sized to the slab dimensions rather than to a generic tile-grid spacing, since the goal with a stone like this is usually to keep joints as unobtrusive as the material allows.

Coordinating access on a gated estate

Wentworth Estate is private and gated, so every delivery of stone, every trade visit and every skip or waste collection needs coordinating with the estate's access arrangements and, in many cases, a managing agent. We build that coordination into the programme from the outset rather than treating it as an afterthought, because a stone job is particularly sensitive to delays — once a substrate is prepped and waiting on a specific batch of slabs, a hold-up at the gate can leave a room out of action for longer than it should be. Being only 15 to 20 minutes from our Bracknell base helps us stay responsive if access timing needs adjusting during the project.

The installation process

Strip-out comes first, with a check of the existing substrate for level, rigidity and damp. First-fix plumbing is set out to your agreed layout, followed by a waterproofed, rigid substrate suitable for stone's weight. Crema Marfil pieces are dry-laid and checked for tonal consistency before fixing with the correct adhesive, movement joints are set to the slab dimensions, and the stone is sealed after grouting. Sanitaryware and brassware are fitted last, with a full snag before handover, all timed around the estate's access arrangements.
